Pasture Posts #161

Here’s the weekly roundup from Watson Farms and your direct connection to your farmer. Enjoy the latest edition of Pasture Posts!

Retaining Carbon

Although our farm doesn’t have many forests, we have plenty of old fence rows that have grown up in trees over the decades starting before we owned the farm. With the arrival of some of our H2A workers, Elena and Genaro, we have been able to start catching up on some much-needed fence row maintenance in the past few weeks.

Many farms would pile up the countless tree limbs in brush piles and burn them, but we prefer to allow the organic matter and nutrients to be reincorporated into the soil. We do this with the help of a tractor driven chipper.

It can take material up to 10 inches in diameter and it reduces it down to small chips that we can either use for livestock bedding or spread back onto the ground to decompose and feed the soil.

In the photo below, Abby and Noah helped me dump some chips out in the layer chickens winter pasture area. The chickens love to scratch and peck through the material and the guard dog loves to roll around in it as you can see in the background.

As you can see in the video below, Elena and Genaro had spent several days clearing limbs that were preventing us from properly maintaining a fence. Then I came along and worked to chip up the limbs, and will soon be able to access the area with a tractor and bush hog to help get rid of the brush and eventually have a little more grass for the cattle.

We performed a similar operation on an old road that hasn’t been used for about 50 years. Having the road back open will help us access certain parts of the farm much better in the years to come.

And it’s especially great that a tool like this chipper allows us to retain the carbon that these trees captured from the air and deposit it back into the soil instead of creating dangerous fires that emit the carbon back into the air. Check out the video below that Noah shot for me!

Pasture Posts #160

Here’s the weekly roundup from Watson Farms and your direct connection to your farmer. Enjoy the latest edition of Pasture Posts!

Today’s Paddock

For this edition of Pasture Posts we wanted to feature our blog series called Today’s Paddock where from time to time we show you the exact piece of pasture that a certain group of livestock are occupying on a particular day.

This is especially significant as spring gets underway and our animal groups are turned onto lush spring pastures. This time of year is a huge transition period as broiler chickens go out on pasture, our cattle herd transitions from mostly hay to mostly pasture, our laying chickens shift from their winter shelter to their field shelters, and our pigs pasture intake greatly increases.

So check out the video below and the latest Today’s Paddock blog post to see the amazing pasture that our cattle are grazing right now!

Today’s Paddock (3-16-24)

This is a fun blog series where we show you exactly the paddock that our animals are enjoying on a particular day. All of our animals are raised in their natural environment and the common denominator among them all is PASTURE ROTATION! So take a look through these blog posts to see where the animals find themselves on a given day.

Our pasture is in a growth spurt right now and the cattle are extremely happy! They’re gaining well and in fact there’s more grass than they can eat. We hope to be purchasing more cattle soon to take advantage of this annual glut of forage.

  • Size: 3.42 acres
  • Number of head: 110
  • Class of livestock: feeder and finisher cattle
  • Type of grasses: rye, ryegrass, clover
  • Grazing duration: 24 hours

A Completely Different Way of Life

Over 90% of pigs in America are raised in crowded barns on concrete. Not our pigs!

Here’s a video that Abby shot a while back when we were moving a set of pigs to a new paddock. This happens at least every week!

You can see that our pigs have room to roam, root, wallow, and do everything else that pigs love to do!

This makes for wholesome pork raised ethically that you can feel good about feeding your family. Read more about how differently our pigs are raised here.

Pasture Posts #156

Here’s the weekly roundup from Watson Farms and your direct connection to your farmer. Enjoy the latest edition of Pasture Posts!

Why do we feed corn and soybeans?

As we identify trends in customer feedback we like to address those trends here in Pasture Posts from time to time. One trend we have seen in the past several months is the question of why we feed corn and soybeans or even grain at all to our monogastric livestock (chickens and pigs).

This discussion does not involve our cattle at all, as they never receive grain and are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished.

So first off, we addressed the issue of feeding grain to chickens and pigs back in Pasture Posts #36, so be sure to check that out.

As to why we use corn and soybeans, there’s several reasons. Here are the main ones:

Proximity

We are able to source our non-GMO corn that we use in our grain rations from a neighboring farmer. This is usually grown within a five minute drive of our farm! Corn is the ingredient that we use the most of in our rations so it is the most important that it is grown as close to us as possible. The miles that this ingredient travels are next to nothing which saves fuel, time and money!

Non-GMO roasted soybeans are a more rare commodity so we have to source them from a bit further away, but we still consider it local. We source these from Barrier Farms in Mt. Pleasant, NC, which is about a 2 hour drive with our truck.
