Answering more of your questions – Pasture Posts #78

Here’s the weekly roundup from Watson Farms and your direct connection to your farmer. Enjoy the latest edition of Pasture Posts!

Over the past few weeks, Kelly has been gathering some more frequently asked questions that many of you have asked over the years. She has done a great job in writing out the answers to these questions below, so take a look and let us know if you have any other questions that you would like answered.

Also, if you didn’t get a chance to check out our last FAQ newsletter, then head over to Pasture Posts #72 for that.

How often do you process animals?

  • We process beef every month of the year and sometimes twice in a month.
  • We process pigs about 6-8 months out of the year. Sometimes it just depends on when we can get the feeder pigs from our supplier.
  • We process chickens from April -November each year. We do not grow chickens in the winter months.

How much freezer space do I need for my half or whole beef?

  • The rule of thumb is 30-35 lbs of meat per cubic foot of freezer space. So for a half beef you get around 160 lbs of meat so you would need around 5-6 cubic feet of space. For a whole you would need around 10-11 cubic feet of space.

How do I add items to my order?

  • Please place a new order for anything you want to add on to your existing order. This will allow us to capture the payment easier, make sure inventory gets taken off correctly, and ensure the order gets in the right channel so there are no mistakes.
  • Please select the SAME delivery option for BOTH orders. If you are a home delivery customer and choose farm pick up for the second option there is a possibility that the second order will not be delivered due to it not being in the right channel and category when we go to check everything before making the delivery route.
  • You will not be charged the second delivery fee. We will remove the second delivery fee before capturing your payment.
  • Leave a note in the comments section letting us know this is a second order. If there has been time between the two orders and we have lots of orders to do that day it can be hard to try to remember who has multiple orders so that we can take the delivery fee off.
  • If you ever get charged the second delivery fee by mistake please reach out to us. We will gladly refund you that fee. Mistakes do happen and it can get crazy around here sometimes!

How long can you hold my order?

  • We have recently had to change this some. With our order volume going up and business growing, freezer space can get limited around here.
  • Once you place an order we ask that you either pick up the order from the farm or have it delivered within 14 days of when the order was placed. If there are special arrangements you have made with us then we might be able to hold it after the 14 days but we are not making any guarantees on that.
  • We reserve the right to enter the products back on the shelves if the order is not picked up or delivered in the 14 days without refunding your payment. Here is a link to our Terms and Conditions on our website that state this as well.

What if I am not home when my delivery takes place?

Home Delivery by Watson Farms

  • Home delivery is carried out by Watson Farms in a refrigerated vehicle. Therefore, your order will not be packaged in insulated containers. All orders will be left at your doorstep on the delivery day unless you have made prior arrangements. Our delivery driver cannot wait until someone comes to the door at each house due to time constraints.
  • If you are unable to be at home when we deliver, you may leave an adequate-size cooler for us with ice packs to leave your order in or provide other instructions. The driver will not unbox any orders to fit it in the cooler so make sure again that it is adequate-size.
  • If we have to de-box your order to fit it in your cooler, the product may be more likely to thaw by disturbing the cold environment of its original box.

UPS

  • We ask that you make every effort to unbox your order as quickly after it is delivered as possible so you can place it in your refrigerator or freezer.
  • All UPS orders are packed with dry ice, and should have enough to keep the product cold until you get to it within a reasonable amount of time. Warm weather obviously has an effect on how long your order will last.
  • Bottom line: don’t delay in unboxing the pasture raised goodness that you’ve been looking forward to receiving!

Product Spotlight

One of our most popular beef bundles is our Beef Family Bundle. It’s a great way to stock your freezer with a large assortment of cuts. And it’s 100% grass-fed and grass-finished from a local family farm!

For some of our recommended products, check out our Featured Product Page.  You might find something that you didn’t even know we had!

Help us spread the word!

It’s now easier than ever to Give $15 and Get $15 through our Referral Program.  We don’t spend a lot of money of advertising, but rather we focus on producing products that people love and are willing to tell others about.  So we depend on word of mouth to find new customers and ultimately to heal more land.

So in an effort to streamline this process we have made it easier to tell others (via email, Facebook, or Twitter) about Watson Farms.  And it’s all automated on the backend, so you don’t have to rely on us to issue the store credits manually.  Just head over to our Referrals Page and start sharing!

We re-use packaging!

We’ve seen a good response to our efforts in re-using packaging! Thanks and keep it up.

You can help us reduce our carbon footprint by returning your CLEAN egg cartons and meat boxes.

The main reason that we switched to plastic egg cartons a while back was because they are so much more durable than paper which could only be used once.  They also protect the eggs much better!

So if you have some egg cartons or boxes to return, you can just place them on your porch on your home delivery day.  Farm pickup customers can, of course, drop them off when you come to pick up your new order.

***We can only re-use OUR cartons or boxes. Please re-use or recycle other boxes or egg cartons elsewhere.***

We redact your personal information found on your meat boxes when we re-use them, but feel free to redact to redact it yourself without damaging the box if you would like.

Thanks for helping us re-use our packaging!
